Solid Edge Tips & Tricks: CAM Express & Synchronous Technology
Happy New Year!
To start off 2011, we continue our Tips & Tricks series with more about CAM Express. In this week’s tip you will see how Synchronous Technology in CAM Express can be used to create an accurate stock shape (based on the design file).

Our GTAC organization continues to be a great source for Tips & Tricks; you will find additional Solid Edge Tips & Tricks below. Not only can customers call GTAC directly for support, you should consider our customer message boards, also known as the “BBS Notes”. Consider joining - You can now create a BBS ONLY WebKey using only your sold-to (must be under maintenance); no WebKey Access Code is required! Some system administrators prefer to keep the WebKey Access Code private since an unrestricted WebKey allows access to product downloads/licensing etc. With a BBS ONLY WebKey, the end user could still use the Siemens PLM Software BBS forums, but be restricted from these other more sensitive areas.
Solid Edge Tips & Tricks: CAM Express Connection
In this week’s tip we show connectivity between Solid Edge and CAM Express from the Velocity Series. In this example synchronous technology is used to make rapid changes to model the model after the tool path has been created. Tight connectivity between CAD and CAM ensures no work is lost as the tool path automatically updates.

Injection Molding? Checkout Simpoe

Susan Cinadr, our tireless Solid Edge marketer and fellow blogger was in China a few weeks ago and got to talking with some folks from the Simpoe company. Simpoe does plastic injection simulation software so she encouraged them to talk to me. After some quick intros, I got a copy of the software and have been doing plastic injections examples in my spare time the last few days. (more…)
New Terms and New Ideas in CAD – Synchronous Technology
With all the changes in CAD that have been happening the last few years, there has been a struggle to come up with terms that properly describe and allow you to compare what comes from each CAD provider. Chad Jackson is making some attempts to discuss this on his blog posts which is leading to a lot of chatter on twitter.
I’m all for getting some standardization if only so I don’t have to write a string of terms or definitions for my readers in every blog post I make. The problem is a lot of the terms just don’t fit us. Or, if they do, they might not fit others.
Below is on picture on Synchronous Technology that has been around since before it was released (3 versions ago).
South African Solid Edge ST3 Stories: Part 3 of 3
Wrapping up our three-part series on the Solid Edge ST3 South African tour is wine packaging manufacturer, Conro Precision. Mainly producing the wine tips for the bag-in-box industry, Dirk Hoffman, designer, has seen improved speed on projects because of synchronous assembly and sheet metal design. He thinks Synchronous Technology will be easier to adopt because of the improved synchronous tools, like the floating ‘Live Rules’ toolbar.

South African Solid Edge ST3 Stories: Part 2 of 3
Yesterday, we launched our three-part video series showcasing Solid Edge ST3 users from South Africa. Today, we focus on plastic injection mold manufacturer Top Line Tooling. Andreas Panzenbock, product designer, talks about associativity in assemblies between a product and mold design. What most struck him about Russ’ demo was bringing in a part from SolidWorks in the assembly, making it dynamic and fully associative. Or as he puts it “unbelievable!”
South African Solid Edge ST3 Stories: Part 1 of 3
The voice of our Solid Edge Tips and Tricks series, Russell Brook, just returned from a week tour in South Africa where he demo’d ST3 to users in three cities: Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. The event focused on four areas: fulfilling the vision of Synchronous Technology, demo of what’s new, managing data and CAM for Solid Edge. Users were excited about what they saw and Russ was able to capture a few of them on film. Special thanks to our partner Esteq for organizing these events.
In this three part video blog series this week, the user testimonials speak of the enthusiasm for
- integrated assembly and design environments of ST3
- ability to use 2D design intent on 3D models
- exploit imported data, specifically SolidWorks data
- improved speed on projects because of synchronous assembly and sheet metal design
In this first video, Albert Botha from ABC Designs speaks about his use of synchronous technology and how he has fully embraced the use of it. He has been self-employed for four months but has been using Solid Edge for 2.5 years. Albert has seen over 50% time savings reducing one project from 3 weeks to 1 week! With the time saved he is able to provide more value to his clients and gain more business.
Check back on Tuesday and Wednesday to hear more from our users in South Africa!

Is the Debate Over History Based CAD Over?
After the last few years of debate in the CAD community between history based technologies and history free technology (Synchronous Technology in Siemens case), 2010 is likely the year the debate shifted from “Is history free technology needed?” to “where is the older history based technology STILL needed?” (you might check out Matt Lombard blog for this – I don’t know if he’d frame the debate this way but you can tell he is thinking about the subject).
