Medicine for your IT Migraine – Teamcenter now on IBM PureSystems

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

Guest blog post by Dave Mitchell
CTO, Teamcenter product development

IBM’s infographic above notes on average more than 70 percent of IT budgets are maintenance focused. This is something I frequently hear from customers. It can make innovation tough.

It’s why we work with partners like IBM. Maybe you saw IBM’s recent announcement on its new product family called PureSystems. They provide what the industry is now calling “expert integrated systems.” They integrate general-purpose system flexibility and cloud elasticity with appliance simplicity tuned to workload. It’s a pretty compelling combination.

Teamcenter now runs on IBM PureSystems – specifically IBM PureFlex – which provides a private infrastructure as a service (IaaS) foundation that can be deployed outside or inside a company’s firewall.

This can help our customers accelerate private IT deployments, optimize IT utilization, streamline administration and ensure mission-critical reliability. IBM PureSystems capabilities provide an elastic environment that enables organizations to more easily expand or contract their Teamcenter deployments.

We’re also working on introducing support for the IBM PureApplication component of IBM PureSystems. We’ll let you know when it’s ready.

You can check out more on PureSystems on the IBM PureSystems web site. We think it will dramatically reduce IT headaches. Take two and call us in the morning ;-) . Seriously, let me know if I can answer any questions about Teamcenter on IBM’s latest technology.

Innovation Leadership Summit: “We, Emerson, are very competitive and we like to win with the help of Siemens”

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

In this year’s Innovation Summit, I got a chance interviewed Dr. Randall Ledford, Chief Technology Officer and senior vice president of Emerson. Dr. Ledford shared his valuable observations on the industry trends and Emerson’s PLM user experience in the interview.

YouTube Preview Image

Emerson is a 25 billion dollars’ company with diversify products, from the world most sophisticated process management computers and sensors to tool-boxes with around 80 different businesses around the world.

“Industry trends and legislative trends from different companies are dictating how companies like Emerson and others, that what they can sell and what is in those products, lead-free of course, other chemicals are also being excluded,” said Dr. Ledford.

“By the year of 2020, some experts say, there will be close to two thousand different materials that cannot be put into products. Teamcenter must allow for these different standards…companies, like Emerson and Siemens have to work together to understand the trends from governments as well as from our customers, to incorporate into PLM. It’s a challenge, it’s exciting and we all need to compete.” added Ledford. “We, Emerson, are very competitive and we like to win and with the help of Siemens and PLM and hopefully moving faster with ECAD environment, Siemens and Emerson can be a winner.”

Dr. Ledford was impressed by Chuck Grindstaff, CEO of Siemens PLM Software’s demonstration on Active Workspace at the Summit in Arizona. “I have been to Siemens Innovation Conference, probably since it began. I may have missed one…maybe two, but I have been to all of them. One of the exciting things about this conference was the introduction of the concept of Active Workspace, that thing’s very promising. If it live up to what I have seen, I think that will be a very exciting step forward for Siemens, Teamcenter and PLM. It’s a first look, it was a canned demo, but the look from it, seems to indicate it puts at the fingertips of the designer or the procurement person, all the information he needs to have. Not only as the information vitally available, it seems to be a different kind of searches of information, by name, by shape are also embedded in this activity. It’s major step forward for Siemens and PLM. It will really make Siemens competitors struggle to keep up,” conclused Ledford.

Innovation Leadership Summit: Collaboration speeds up our time-to-market (Adtran)

Friday, March 16th, 2012

Located in Huntsville Alabama, Adtran, a telecommunication OEM manufacturer presented at the 2012 Innovation Leadership Summit.

Global collaboration is one of Adtran’s business imperatives. How to ensure global engineering team to stay at the same page is a key requirement to Adtran’s PLM solutions. “Technology doesn’t mean anything when people don’t know how to use it,” said Tom Dadmun in his presentation.

Tom Dadmun, vice president of Adtran’s program management office emphasized that the importance of change to ensure a company maintaining its competitive advantage. He quoted Jack Welch’s famous line: if your company is changing at a rate of speed slower that what’s changing on the outside the end is near.

Siemens PLM Software Teamcenter helps Adtran embrace changes across the enterprise worldwide simultaneously and gets everyone tied together.

Integrating social networking tools to collaborate better and also tie key customer in a private chat room to better understand their needs. “Clearly we want to make sure that collaboration speeds up our time- to-market (TTM). TTM is a significant KPI that we measure in our corporation. And being to market in time and ahead of your competitors is a key for us.”

Mobility and social networking are other factors help Adtran engineering community to collaborate on a shared platform and capture customer’s requirement efficiently. iPad is used through Adtran’s senior management team to monitor key performance indicators and for video conferencing. Adtran is looking at the new ways that Siemens PLM has tied in to the iPad as they move along (such as Teamcenter mobility).

Interview with Craig Rode from Microsoft

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Before I started into all this online stuff, I was in charge of the alliance we formed with Microsoft.  Way before that, I used to work with a guy named Craig Rode when we were both responsible for the marketing of some CAD/CAM/CAE products.  Now Craig is at Microsoft so I got the chance to both catch up with Craig and with the state of our alliance at PLM Connection.  In the video below I ask Craig about what’s changed in the last few years in the Microsoft – Siemens PLM Software alliance, the role that platform providers play in helping customers get value out of PLM and how Office has developed as a platform. ATK derives decision metrics using Teamcenter Report & Analytics

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

Listening to ATK Armament Systems’ Krista Vilandre and Paul Nelson present how they use Teamcenter reporting and analytics to pull metrics from Teamcenter systems engineering. They discuss why they measure a “requirements volatility metric.” They track requirements for months when there is a released document revision. Paul points out that previously, when a program had a need for reporting, they would log a formal request if it would take more than 80 hours to produce, and a management board would have to evaluate the request and decide whether to create that custom report. It was a major time effort. Then ATK had the idea to instead use their systems engineering business intelligence engine to generate reports, so they worked with eQube and Siemens PLM Software (which now offers an integration between Teamcenter and eQube) to automatically generate requirements reports.
