Regional Users Meeting – San Jose California

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Have you attended a Siemens PLM Users group meeting in the past? Are you aware of the annual conference and that there are users group meetings held regionally throughout the year? If not, you should.

I have just returned from the Northern California Regional Users group meeting, which was held in San Jose California.  This event provided a forum for users to hear the latest about the Siemens PLM family of products.  More importantly, this event helped Northern California users network with other users to share experiences and new ideas.

There were 2 keynote sessions.  First John R. Baker, reviewed what’s new in NX7, and gave us a preview of some of the many things coming in the next release of NX.

(I apologize for the poor picture quality, I forgot to bring my camera, so these were taken with my camera Phone )

Next up was Dave McLaughlin, who provided us with an update to Teamcenter 8.

In the afternoon, there were six different break-out sessions;

NX CAE Update

Marilyn Tomlin

NX7; HD3D & Synchronous Technology

Jerry Sarfati

Managing Electronics; MCAD, ECAD, & Software

Krish Krishnamurthy

Motion Control; Overview of Siemens Controllers

Daniel Martinez

Tecnomatix; Part Assembly/Planning & Simulation

Sean Bradley

NX PMI – The shift from paper to electronic

Dave Wingrave

I’d like to thank everyone (Dave, Lorena, and many others) that helped put on this event. I was very impressed with the cooperative nature of the attendees. Everyone wanted to learn and share and it appeared that all would walk away with new ideas for making their environments more productive.

The next time you hear about a local users meeting – do your best to attend. You will learn something, you will make new contacts, and even more importantly – you might just help a fellow colleague.

Jerry

Solid Edge, PLM World and Ken Grundey

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

Ken Grundey is one of the CAD experts in the Solid Edge community. You might know him from the Solid Edge discussion groups where he may help out with some technical questions or engage in some debates on how Solid Edge should be improved. He’s also one of many customers that help beta test Solid Edge using real world data and processes.

Ken recently took on a new role with PLM World to help get a larger voice for the Solid Edge users. I caught up with Ken for a quick interview while he was in town trying out Solid Edge ST2:

CAD/PLM in the Classroom

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

One thing I really like about our user group conferences is the long-term connections created. Many years ago I met Paul Zang from Kettering University at a PLM Connection event. I’ve worked for a couple other companies (including PLM World) since then and my path has crossed Paul at every turn.

He has been in involved with our Academic SIG at the conference and continues to give back to the community. He attended my “Social Media in CAD/PLM” ppt at the conference and we spent some time talking about social media in the classroom.

Here’s a quick video clip on some of what he faces in the classroom teaching CAD/PLM and one of the takeaways he is taking home from the conference. (ignore the cleaning people coming into the room wink)

Emerson – Liebert on PDM

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

I talked with some of the folks at PLM Connection from Emerson Network Power – Liebert.

Chris Oesterle, CAD/PLM administrator, presented on their upgrade from Solid Edge Embedded Client to Teamcenter. They recently migrated 300k files. He shares some tips as well as highlights some sessions he found valuable at the conference in this video clip.

Jack Beeckman, PLM Manager, shared more in this video clip on Liebert’s expanded PDM needs such as multi-site capabilities and 4-tier architecture. He also highlights a few lessons learned they are taking home with them.

If you want to learn more about Liebert, check out this case study.

For those of you who spend any time in SecondLife, let me know and we’ll meet in-world with Jack (aka Cadman Parx).

NASCAR Analysis, RP & PLM at Hendrick Motorsports

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Jim Wall, director of engine engineering at Hendrick Motorsports, presented at PLM Connection on analysis and PLM in NASCAR.

I caught up with him after his presentation for this video clip.

Jim noted that one of the biggest design challenges they face is “keeping up with the pace of change” to be a winning team.

One of the more interesting parts of his presentation was the use of stereolithography rapid prototyping. They produce a full scale resin V8 engine that can fire.

He noted that there is so much data created in their business that a big challenge is to manage that data along with the “technical memory” of their team. They leverage a wireless Teamcenter web client that allows them to record an issue right on the track that instantly creates a workflow so they can begin improvements as soon as possible.

Some compelling stats:

  • 600 engine builds/year
  •

  • 71 CAD users
  •

  • 237 PDM users
  •

  • 37 GB data vault
  •

  • 2,200 problem reports
  •

  • (see more on slide 8 via SlideShare below)

Lockheed Martin Keynote on PPLM Strategy

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Chuck Artymovich, director of operations, Lockheed Martin, presented yesterday on the Product and Process Lifecycle Management Strategy (PPLM) at Lockheed. It’s interesting to consider the complexities of managing a 100-year-old lifecycle.

One thing he noted was you have to build the right product – but also build it perfectly. With fighter aircraft, tolerances are often 1/3 the width of a human hair.

I spoke with Chuck after his presentation and here is a short video of our conversation.

We also announced this week Lockheed’s expanded use of Teamcenter on the JSF program to enable a full digital PLM.

(Check out previous blog coverage on Lockheed includes their Aviation Week Program Excellence Award and a presentation at last year’s PLM Connection event.)

My Chat With Chuck

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Attendees of PLM Connection have a chat with our CTO each year at the end of the conference. It’s an open mic setting where Chuck Grindstaff and his development leaders address any questions customers have.

I had my own brief “Chat With Chuck” today. Chuck shared key focus areas for our R&D in the future as well as his thoughts on lean engineering to guide companies through this economy.

Here is a brief video via YouTube of our chat.
