NX Hints and Tips – view a model from inside the model
We all know how to zoom, pan and rotate around models. But what if you want to view a model from inside the model?
You can use this method to show a correct perspective view from inside a vehicle, a building, or a ship.
This technique uses two NX functions – creating a camera and setting the center of rotation.
Remember that the camera location and perspective are stored with the camera definition, but not the Rotate Point.

NX Hints and Tips – Full Screen Mode
Sometimes your NX session gets cluttered with too many open windows and toolbars.
Did you know that there is a way to enter full screen mode in NX? Continue reading “NX Hints and Tips – Full Screen Mode” »
Preview of the New NX Help Libraries
At PLM Connection 2011, I caught up with Gregg Makepeace, the NX Technical Documentation Manager at Siemens PLM Software. Gregg was demonstrating some of the new features coming in the NX help libraries.
In this video, Gregg shows us some examples. Continue reading “Preview of the New NX Help Libraries” »
NX at PLM Connections – Day 1
The kickoff to Siemens PLM Connection got off to a great start on Monday morning. Some of my other colleagues have done an excellent job in covering those sessions.
There were two main NX sessions that took place on Monday. The first Session was lead by Joan Hirsch, vice-president for NX Development.
Joan reviewed some of the key points of the NX strategy: Continue reading “NX at PLM Connections – Day 1” »
Solid Edge Tips & Tricks: CAM Express Face Milling Associativity
This week’s show brings back Jim Wright and CAM Express. Find out how tool paths created with ‘face selection’ in CAM Express automatically update after changes to your Solid Edge models, eliminating the need to recreate a new boundary or update it to match the new geometry.

MORE TIPS & TRICKS FROM GTAC
What is the option ‘Use Geometry-based Naming’ for in the Part Copy command when selecting Parasolid files?

Meet the Solid Edge Field Support & Testing Team at the ST4 Event
Previously, I introduced you to Jeff Walker and the Solid Edge Planning Team. Thank you to the folks who sent Tweets (@MFGTech), linked to our post from theirs (@SolidDNA) and sent notes of appreciation. We always love to hear feedback.
The reason I started this series was to give Edgers a preview of the people behind the scenes at Solid Edge. The folks that work on the product will be available at the Solid Egde ST4 Global Launch Event. (Reminder, Early-bird registration end March 31, 2011. Save $100!) If you have questions, comments, concerns or you just want to see something specific in future releases of Solid Edge, these are the folks that make it happen.
This week, I would like to introduce you to Laura Watson and her team, Solid Edge Field Support and Testing Team. Many of you may know Laura from her work with Solid Edge Beta Testing and some of the folks you may recognize from our Tips and Tricks series, such as Doug Stainbrook, Jim Wright and Mark Thompson. This is a large group and if you add up all the years of experience in the CAD/CAM industry from this team, it’s close to 300 years of knowledge. In my personal opinion, this is one of the reasons we continually state that Solid Edge is “design for engineers … by engineers.”
Let’s meet the team
Laura Watson – Manager, Solid Edge Operations
Laura Watson is responsible for the Release Management, Quality, and Technical Field Support for Solid Edge and other Velocity Series products. Laura has been with the company for over 20 years and started working on Solid Edge with Version 1 in 1994. Laura holds a bachelors degree in mathematics from Jacksonville State University.
FIELD SUPPORT TEAM
This group creates Solid Edge demos, produces and delivers technical Solid Edge update training and supports Solid Edge pre-sales activities globally.

Solid Edge ST4 Global Launch Event; Meet the SE Planning Team
If you are a Solid Edge customer, you may have received the email today from Senior Vice President and General Manager of Solid Edge and Velocity Series, Karsten Newbury (@Newbk), about the Solid Edge ST4 Global Launch Event. We’re calling this a launch event however with the large amount of interest from the “Edgers”, it’s turning out to be one heck of user event, in my opinion. And we just opened registration today! Space is limited so secure your spot and register now. Our early-bird discount ends on March 31st, 2011. (Note: We have registered a #hashtag for the event #ST4event for anyone that wants to follow the discussion on Twitter. )
Part of the draw to this event is the location, Rocket City. Yep, that’s right, Huntsville, AL. Why is HSV such a great location? Well, it just so happens to be the home to the Solid Edge Development team! At this event you’ll find plenty of representatives, including the “fathers of Solid Edge”, Dan Staples and Bill McClure, as well as Jeff Walker, the head of our Solid Edge planning group. If you attended the Productivity Summits this summer in the U.S. or some of the ones still happening around the world, you are very familiar with Dan, Bill and Jeff.
The team behind these three men are the unsung heroes that work diligently to make a very stable, robust, <insert synonym for awesome here>, bug-free
CAD tool. I thought it would be nice to give you a little background on some of the technical experts that users will meet at the Solid Edge ST4 Global Launch Event. I asked Jeff Walker to provide me with some info on the planning team. Everyone on Jeff’s team will be at the event so if you have a particular area of the product that you would like to discuss, track these folks down. Oh, but you have to register for the event first!
Let’s meet the team!
(PS – Mark Burhop, fellow blogger, belonged to this team, but he recently got a new job. Congrats Mark!)
Jeff Walker – Manager, Solid Edge Product Design
Jeff has a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Auburn University. Prior to his role in the Solid Edge Planning organization he was a stress analyst for the US Army Missile Command using FEA tools to conduct studies of missile systems and related equipment. Jeff has over 20 years of experience in the mechanical CAD and CAE software industry.
