NX Hints and Tips – view a model from inside the model

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

We all know how to zoom, pan and rotate around models.  But what if you want to view a model from inside the model?

You can use this method  to show a correct perspective view from inside a vehicle, a building, or a ship.

This technique uses two NX functions – creating a camera and setting the center of rotation.

Remember that the camera location and perspective are stored with the camera definition, but not the Rotate Point.

New NX 8 Help and Videos

Monday, February 27th, 2012

With NX8, the NX Help system has a new interface that makes it easier for you to find information and browse content.

Some of the key enhancements are:

  • Search performance is improved.
  • Search filtering gives you control to search in specific areas of NX.
  • Help is reorganized to make navigation more logical, to increase the relevancy of search results, and to make search filtering more specific.
  • Breadcrumb links are available on each page to help you keep track of your location. ( A table of contents is still available, but is not displayed by default. )
  • Links to all related information are displayed on the right side. Links are organized by information type under different headings.
  • And my favorite enhancement; the video examples included with the Help now include voice-over narration. This narration provides important information about the steps being demonstrated. For each video, you can use the options on the play bar to display closed caption text or to mute the narration.

Following is a video from NX Help:

NX CAE Symposium – Keynotes

Monday, November 7th, 2011

Here is another report from Mark at the Siemens PLM CAE Symposium.

————–

The NX CAE Symposium kicked off this morning at the Joe Gibbs Racing Facility.   Attendees staying at the Hilton were treated to a scenic shuttle ride into the Huntersville facility, with the fall colors at their peak.  I found myself impressed by the contemporary architecture of the Joe Gibbs facility and its lush, wooded surroundings.  A buffet breakfast consisting of biscuits, sausage, fresh fruit, coffee and juices got everyone off to a great start!

Jon Heidorn, VP of Marketing for the Americas gave the opening address, and welcomed attendees to the first ever NX CAE Symposium.

The opening customer key note was a joint presentation by Mark Bringle and Nelson Cosgrove of Joe Gibbs Racing.

Mark and Nelson entertained the group with numerous NASCAR video clips and interesting facts.  I was awed to hear that JGR routinely races 43 cars in every race, every week, and that 21 CNC machines operating in two shifts are required to satisfy the resulting part fabrication demand.  I also learned that NASCAR is now broadcast in 150 countries, and in 30 different languages, making it nothing less than a spectator sports super-phenomenon!  It was great to hear that JGR employs NX Flow CFD aerodynamic simulations for intensive rock sorting of concepts, postponing the staggering $30,000/day cost of wind tunnel testing until the later stages of the design.

Come back for more from the Symposium.

Siemens PLM NX CAE Symposium

Monday, November 7th, 2011

This week, Siemens PLM is hosting our NX CAE Symposium.  Unfortunately, I am unable to attend, but my colleague Mark Subramaniam will attend and provide reports from the event.

————————

Siemens PLM Software will proudly to host its first ever NX CAE Symposium, from 7-8 November in Huntersville, North Carolina.  Located 12 miles north of Charlotte, Huntersville is home to acclaimed NASCAR racing outfit, Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR).  This year’s symposium will be held at JGR’s 250,000 square foot facility.  The facility, which supports numerous NASCAR teams, employs a staff of 450.  Owner and proprietor, Joe Gibbs needs little introduction, having lead the Washington Redskins to four NFC Championship and three Superbowl titles, as head coach.   JGR has enjoyed three NASCAR Cup Series Championship victories under the pro football hall-of-famer’s leadership.  The team receives major corporate sponsorship from the likes of Home Depot, FedEx, Mars Candy, Coca Cola, and Toyota.

The debut event will feature diverse presentations from customers including Joe Gibbs Racing, ATK Launch Systems, MDA, Proctor & Gamble, Southwest Solar Technologies, Hendrick Motorsports, Jet Propulsion Laboratories, ATA, Siemens Energy, Caterpillar, and Lockheed Martin.  In-house presentations from Siemens PLM Software, and a certain-to-be-lively panel discussion with PLM Industry expert, Dennis Nagy round out the two day agenda.

Attendees checking in last night had the opportunity to mingle, and socialize at the welcome reception, held at the host hotel.

Stay tuned for exciting updates and developments as the conference kicks off tomorrow.

What’s new in NX 8 Product Design

Monday, October 17th, 2011

NX 8 contains over 400 customer focused projects across the entire product.  In product deisgn, some of these include:

  • Modular design NX introduces a modular design capability that simplifies modeling and editing of complex designs, and enables parallel work by  multiple designers.
  • Feature-based modeling A new feature browser provides a visually rich graphic view of features and their relations that helps you to more quickly and intuitively understand design intent and the impacts of design changes.
  • New Patterning. You can now create patterns with a wider selection of layouts that included linear, polygon, along, reference, circular spiral or general options. You can also fill a specified boundary with a pattern feature, create symmetric patterns in linear layout, stagger columns or rows and radiate patterns in circular or polygon layouts.
  • Synchronous modeling The fourth release of NX featuring synchronous technology, NX 8 includes improved synchronous modeling capabilities that improve modeling flexibility and enable evaluation of more design alternatives in less time.
  • Freeform modeling NX 8 enhances freeform design with streamlined workflows and enhanced controls for a wide range curve and surface operations, including edge matching, sweeping, bridge and extension surfaces, variable offsets, curve fitting and alignment, blending and spline editing.
  • Assembly design NX 8 features a constraint navigator that makes it easier to find and work on assembly constraints and resolve issues. Available from the resource bar, the constraint navigator displays configurable columns of information and options that enable you to group constraint information by components, by constraints, and by status.
  • Routed systems design Routing applications in NX 8 help you automate part selection and placement to reduce modeling time. You can automatically select and place parts based on destination characteristics and run definition, with part search criteria based on defined rules and relationships.
  • Sheet metal design Sheet metal design in NX 8 is improved with capabilities for modeling in the context of an assembly. You can now create associative flanges using existing geometry to control the extent and angle of the flange.
  • Re-use The NX Reuse Library, a common platform for all re-usable design elements, has been enhanced with additional library management tools that enable you to add or remove libraries, edit properties, control the visibility and specify which libraries are available to NX applications.
  • Visualization The visualization tools in NX have been enhanced with advanced realtime shading and rendering tools that deliver new levels of realism for aesthetic design review and validation.
  • Drafting NX 8 drafting tools have been enhanced with a set of commands for creating and editing your own custom drawings templates.
  • NX help documentation NX8 features a new look and feel and navigational aids for NX documentation. The new user interface makes it easier to find information and browse contents.

That’s a long list, but I’ve barely scratched the surface.   To get all the details, take a look at What’s New in NX 8 .
