NX Hints and Tips – view a model from inside the model
We all know how to zoom, pan and rotate around models. But what if you want to view a model from inside the model?
You can use this method to show a correct perspective view from inside a vehicle, a building, or a ship.
This technique uses two NX functions – creating a camera and setting the center of rotation.
Remember that the camera location and perspective are stored with the camera definition, but not the Rotate Point.

NX8 Help Videos – Create a path thru complex curves
This is my second post on the new NX8 help video tutorials. As I mentioned last time, these videos are available to all NX users when they install NX8.
This week, let’s look at a more complex scenario. We create a path through complex curves. Continue reading “NX8 Help Videos – Create a path thru complex curves” »
New NX 8 Help and Videos
With NX8, the NX Help system has a new interface that makes it easier for you to find information and browse content.
Some of the key enhancements are:
- Search performance is improved.
- Search filtering gives you control to search in specific areas of NX.
- Help is reorganized to make navigation more logical, to increase the relevancy of search results, and to make search filtering more specific.
- Breadcrumb links are available on each page to help you keep track of your location. ( A table of contents is still available, but is not displayed by default. )
- Links to all related information are displayed on the right side. Links are organized by information type under different headings.
- And my favorite enhancement; the video examples included with the Help now include voice-over narration. This narration provides important information about the steps being demonstrated. For each video, you can use the options on the play bar to display closed caption text or to mute the narration.
Following is a video from NX Help:
Be sure to click on the red CC button, to see the caption text.

LEGO World 2012 and Siemens PLM Software
The 11th annual LEGO World Fair was held in Copenhagen, Denmark on Feb 16 – Feb 19 2012. In addition to 16 trucks filled with 10 tons of LEGO’s, Siemens PLM was there to demonstrate tools that Lego plans to use to manage the digital world.
Going beyond the physical brick and into augmented reality, video games and mobile applications, Lego is using NX software to design, control and manage the data that is needed to create new products. More than 40,000 people who attended the show were able to see the technology first hand, which is the result of a 20 year partnership with Lego.

Being National Engineers Week in the U.S., it’s important to note that having future engineers see this technology first hand is helping to “inspire the builders of tomorrow”.
P.S. I’m the proud father of an Engineer, that grew up playing with Lego’s!

NX CAE Symposium – Final Sessions
Following is Marks last post from the NX CAE Symposium
———————————
After lunch on Day 2, we all returned to our seats for the afternoon presentation line-up. Randy Huber of Caterpillar gave the attendees a spirited mini-history of Caterpillar’s products, elaborate with its various acquisitions over the years. He went on to illustrate Caterpillar’s long legacy, and continued heavy dependence on CAE methodologies for swift, robust product development. My favorite of the numerous examples shared, was the animated result from motion analysis of a wheel loader in action [Pictured below].
The remainder of the afternoon featured numerous insightful presentations from key members of Siemens PLM’s CAE Center of Excellence, and CAE Product Management organizations. Speakers included including Doug Wenk, Paul Caito, Rick Licursi, and May Taylor.
Late in the afternoon, after all the scheduled presentations had been delivered, and as organizers prepared to wrap up the event, in walked a surprise guest…..Joe Gibbs!
We were all absolutely thrilled to see the pro football hall-of-famer take to the stage to address us and even entertain a few questions. I found Joe instantly likeable, his charisma and warmth filling the room in milliseconds. He spoke anecdotally, drawing from both his professional wisdom, and personal life in equal amounts – punctuated frequently with humorous remarks that had the room erupting in laughter. I came away with the following interpretation of Joe’s philosophy – do what you enjoy, do it with passion, and it’s okay to try something different – just take that passion with you.
See you next year,

NX CAE Symposium – Keynotes
Here is another report from Mark at the Siemens PLM CAE Symposium.
————–
The NX CAE Symposium kicked off this morning at the Joe Gibbs Racing Facility. Attendees staying at the Hilton were treated to a scenic shuttle ride into the Huntersville facility, with the fall colors at their peak. I found myself impressed by the contemporary architecture of the Joe Gibbs facility and its lush, wooded surroundings. A buffet breakfast consisting of biscuits, sausage, fresh fruit, coffee and juices got everyone off to a great start!
Jon Heidorn, VP of Marketing for the Americas gave the opening address, and welcomed attendees to the first ever NX CAE Symposium.
The opening customer key note was a joint presentation by Mark Bringle and Nelson Cosgrove of Joe Gibbs Racing.
Mark and Nelson entertained the group with numerous NASCAR video clips and interesting facts. I was awed to hear that JGR routinely races 43 cars in every race, every week, and that 21 CNC machines operating in two shifts are required to satisfy the resulting part fabrication demand. I also learned that NASCAR is now broadcast in 150 countries, and in 30 different languages, making it nothing less than a spectator sports super-phenomenon! It was great to hear that JGR employs NX Flow CFD aerodynamic simulations for intensive rock sorting of concepts, postponing the staggering $30,000/day cost of wind tunnel testing until the later stages of the design.
Come back for more from the Symposium.

Siemens PLM NX CAE Symposium
This week, Siemens PLM is hosting our NX CAE Symposium. Unfortunately, I am unable to attend, but my colleague Mark Subramaniam will attend and provide reports from the event.
————————
Siemens PLM Software will proudly to host its first ever NX CAE Symposium, from 7-8 November in Huntersville, North Carolina. Located 12 miles north of Charlotte, Huntersville is home to acclaimed NASCAR racing outfit, Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR). This year’s symposium will be held at JGR’s 250,000 square foot facility. The facility, which supports numerous NASCAR teams, employs a staff of 450. Owner and proprietor, Joe Gibbs needs little introduction, having lead the Washington Redskins to four NFC Championship and three Superbowl titles, as head coach. JGR has enjoyed three NASCAR Cup Series Championship victories under the pro football hall-of-famer’s leadership. The team receives major corporate sponsorship from the likes of Home Depot, FedEx, Mars Candy, Coca Cola, and Toyota.
The debut event will feature diverse presentations from customers including Joe Gibbs Racing, ATK Launch Systems, MDA, Proctor & Gamble, Southwest Solar Technologies, Hendrick Motorsports, Jet Propulsion Laboratories, ATA, Siemens Energy, Caterpillar, and Lockheed Martin. In-house presentations from Siemens PLM Software, and a certain-to-be-lively panel discussion with PLM Industry expert, Dennis Nagy round out the two day agenda.
Attendees checking in last night had the opportunity to mingle, and socialize at the welcome reception, held at the host hotel.
Stay tuned for exciting updates and developments as the conference kicks off tomorrow.

Trends in Container Design
At PLM Europe, I had the opportunity to attend John Manderfields presentation “NX for Sustainable Packaging”. During his session he discussed the trends for Sustainability, differences between packaging (plastic bottles) in North America versus Europe, and more.
After his session, he sat down with me, and we discussed today’s trends for making plastic bottles.
John Manderfield is the Director of Creative Design, at Consolidated Container Company.
